George Lane Thomas Obituary
George Lane Thomas, 75, of Providence, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 15, 2026. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, he was the beloved son of the late Simmie and Eunice Thomas.
George began his career at General Electric, where he worked for many years. Deeply rooted in faith, service, and compassion, he later dedicated much of his life to uplifting others through his work with the Community Safety Net Association in Providence. A constant and caring presence in his community, George brought people together through block parties, Toys for Tots, back-to-school events, and youth sports. He had a gift for connection—never missing a chance to engage in conversation, share a laugh, or make someone feel seen. George truly loved life, and he made sure those around him felt that joy.
He was predeceased by his parents, Simmie and Eunice Thomas; his son, Jamal Gomes; his brothers, Lawrence Edward Thomas, Sr., Simmie Thomas, Jr., Robert Thomas, Ross Thomas, and Albert Thomas; and his sister, Annie Labay.
George was a devoted and proud father to Marcus Thomas and Courtnie Thomas, father-in-law to Candace Bourgeois -Thomas, and a loving grandfather to Alex Thomas, Jaden Thomas, and Paige Thomas. He cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren, sharing laughter with Alex, bike rides with Jaden, and creating lasting memories Paige. He is also survived by his dear siblings Willie Thomas and Gwen Curtis of Springfield, MA, and Joseph Thomas of Florida.
George found joy in life’s simple and beautiful moments—music, dancing, singing, and time spent with those he loved. Whether visiting his son Jamal in Taunton, playing basketball and tennis, or simply sharing a story, he brought warmth and smack talk wherever he went. Known affectionately as Dad, grandpa, Mr. Thomas, Coach Thomas, “Georgieman,” “Sha-Sha”, or “Elvis,” his generosity, steady presence, and willingness to uplift others left a lasting imprint on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
