Obituary of Joaquim Manuel Ferreira
Joaquim Manuel Ferreira (Scooby), 71, of Providence, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2025, from injuries sustained from being hit by a car while crossing the street on Friday, February 7. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Albertina (Conroy) Cosme and the late Angel L Cosme. He is survived by his wife, Lynn (Morehouse) Ferreira; his son Joaquim M. Ferreira Jr. of Virginia; his daughter Michelle Moreno of Massachusetts; his sister Ann Marie of Woodside, NY; his sister Angela of Providence, and six grandchildren. He also leaves his fur-son Bailey and his best friend, Kenny Vincent Guertin of Providence.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Darrel Ferreira. Joaquim joined the United States Air Force in 1972, serving in Anchorage, Alaska, and Homestead, Florida, among other locations. He held various positions throughout his life, including courier/driver for several companies in RI and Florida. He worked as a driver for RIPTA. He also worked for the Orlando Florida Corp Salvation Army for a number of years before moving back to RI. He was a very proud veteran and shared that sentiment wherever he went. His favorite singer of all time was Elvis Presley, with Michael Jackson being a very close second. He loved Scooby Doo – so much so that he was given the nickname Scooby by many of his friends. His favorite drink and snack combo was Coca-Cola and Hostess Cupcakes. He loved the Los Angeles Lakers, the New York Yankees, and he was a lifelong fan of WWE Wrestling. Like Frank Sinatra, Joaquim did it his way in life. He was a big supporter of the LGBTQ community and attended many of their events.
Mr Ferreira will have a gathering of friends and family at Mount Pleasant Funeral and Cremation Service, 168 Academy Ave, Providence, on March 13, 2025, from 9am to 10am, followed by a service with military honors at 11am in RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joaquim’s memory to Operation Stand Down of RI, 1010 Hartford Avenue, Johnston, RI 02919 (www.osdri.org); to your local LGBTQ Support Group, or to the Salvation Army. For further information and condolences, please visit MOUNTPLEASANTFH.COM.
