Obituary of Connell McCormick
CONNELL MCCORMICK, “WRIGHT”
DIED UNEXPECTEDLY IN FAYETTEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA, AT THE AGE OF 71. HE WAS BORN ON NOVEMBER 23, 1952, IN SANFORD, NORTH CAROLINA, TO EDITH W. (PRINCE) MCCORMICK AND THE LATE WILLIAM B. MCCORMICK.
HE ATTENDED CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL. HE PLAYED FOR THE SCHOOL BAND AND COMPLETED A BARBERSHOP APPRENTICESHIP WHILE WORKING FOR HIS FOSTER FAMILY AT BRIGHT FUNERAL HOME. HE GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL IN 1972 AND OBTAINED A CORRECTIONAL POSITION AT THE STATE HOSPITAL, WORKING WITH THE CRIMINALLY INSANE FOR 23 1⁄2 YEARS. HE WAS ALSO THE PROUD OWNER OF MCCORMICK’S LIMOUSINE SERVICE. HE SERVED AS A CIVIL RIGHTS ADVOCATE, PROMOTING EQUALITY AND CIVIL LIBERTIES FOR ALL PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN DENIED EQUAL TREATMENT. HE LATER MOVED TO SANFORD, NC. THERE, HE WORKED AS A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER AT THE STATE MENTAL HOSPITAL AND THE WAKE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT. HE RETURNED TO RHODE ISLAND IN 2008 AND WORKED AS A BARBER AT CANDY’S BARBERSHOP. IN 2017, HE RETURNED TO NORTH CAROLINA, WHERE HE WORKED AS A SECURITY OFFICER AT CENTRAL CAROLINA COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN LITTLETON, NC. HE RETIRED AT THE AGE OF 69 AND ESTABLISHED MCCORMICK’S WE RIDE
TRANSPORTATION SERVICE.
HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS CHILDREN, LAKEISHA (MCCORMICK) SLOANE OF NEW MILFORD, CT, RASHONDA (GRAM) JUDD OF PANAMA CITY, FL, MISTY HARRIS, AND CONNELL MCCORMICK JR. OF CRANSTON, RI, MATTHEW MCCORMICK OF WARWICK RI, SEVEN
GRANDCHILDREN AND THREE GREAT GRANDCHILDREN.
HE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS BROTHER WILLIAM E. MCCORMICK. LEFT TO MOURN HIS FOUR SISTERS, PHYLLIS A. MCCORMICK OF SANFORD, NC, MARIE Y. MCCORMICK OF BRIDGEPORT, CT, JULIAN D. (MCCORMICK) JOHNSON OF NAPERVILLE, IL, LINDA J. (MCCORMICK) BOOTHE OF BRIDGEPORT, CT. HE ALSO LEAVES THREE BROTHERS, TWIN DONNELL OF SANFORD, NC, DAVID L. OF CRANSTON, RI, AND ERNEST MCCORMICK OF BRIDGEPORT, CT.
HE ENJOYED ROAD TRIPS WITH HIS SON AND TWIN BROTHER, PLAYING CARDS (SPADES), ATTENDING CHURCH, PLAYING INSTRUMENTS (THE TRUMPET AND KEYBOARD), CUTTING HAIR, COMPLETING YARD WORK AND SPENDING TIME WITH HIS DOG, “GIRL”. HE LEAVES US WITH HIS MEMORABLE SAYINGS, “WHAT U GOT COLD TO DRINK”, “YOU’LL ALWAYS BE MY HORSE EVEN IF YOU NEVER WIN A RACE” AND IN RESPONSE TO THE PASSING OF LOVED ONES, “THEY ARE GONE TO A BETTER PLACE”. WITH ALL THE PAIN IN OUR HEARTS AND TEARS IN OUR EYES, HE WOULD WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT HE HAS GONE TO A BETTER PLACE
TO BE WITH HIS LORD AND SAVIOR.
